The Brown County girls tennis team has secured the Western Indiana Conference title.

The Eagles won 4-1 over previously unbeaten conference opponent Edgewood.

The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams won early, but the No. 2 singles player suffered a defeat.

That left securing a championship in the hands of the No. 1 and No. 3 singles, and both players took their matches to the third set for an edge-of-your-seat finish.

No. 3 singles Mary Kate McCann locked in the title with her victory. She racked up multiple aces with a monster serve. After her match, she called the victory the greatest moment of her young tennis career.

No. 1 singles Josie Gray also went the distance. She lost the first set to Edgewood’s Shelby Williamson, but she revived her game to take the next two sets.

Both Brown County coaches – Thom Miller and Steve Makurat – said they were proud of their players, who work hard year round to achieve moments like they did on their home court Thursday night.
