After more than three hours of hearing testimony, the Board of Zoning Appeals voted to postpone a decision on a request to rezone property near Bean Blossom to allow for a music venue.

The meeting that started at 6 p.m. Wednesday concluded at 9:30 p.m., when acting board chairman John Dillberger suggested the BZA not render a decision on the Farabaugh family’s request due to the statements made and documents submitted during the lengthy public hearing.

The issue before the board was whether or not to allow a special exception for a private recreation development on a 66-acre property located to the east of State Road 135 outside of Bean Blossom.

The discussion touched on matters important to both the project supporters and its opposition.

Some said that Brown County needed the thousands of people the development would attract. They said Nashville and Brown County had been in a state of decline since the heyday 1970s.

Others feared a return of the Boogie, an annual event that reportedly brought drunkenness, public sex acts and extreme noise 24/7 over a 10-year period.

Fourteen people spoke in favor of the BZA approving the request by the Farabaugh family, while 19 people spoke against it.

Dillberger said he would like additional time to review the new information. Besides Peggy Thompson, his fellow board members supported the approach to ruling on the emotionally charged issue.

At the start of the meeting, BZA board chairman Lamond Martin recused himself because of an alleged relationship with the Farabaugh family. Martin said he did not appreciate the unfounded allegation.

A decision is expected at the next BZA meeting, which is set for 6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the County Office Building in Nashville. (This is a correction from a previously published date.)
