Fair officials 'keeping an eye out' in wake of flu concerns
Updated on: 08.02.12

Brown County Fair events, including tonight's swine show, are going on as planned despite concerns in three Indiana counties about a flu virus in pigs.

Monroe County Fair officials closed the swine barn to the public Tuesday after several hogs that had been exhibiting flu-like symptoms were sent home. People who had been in contact with those pigs also reported symptoms of type A influenza, which can include a fever, coughing and lack of appetite. As of Tuesday night, lab results had not confirmed that the pigs had the flu.

In LaPorte County, H3N2 flu was confirmed in several hogs and people who had had contact with them at the county fair. One case of H1N1 flu was confirmed in a pig at the Hendricks County Fair, the Herald-Times (Bloomington) reported.

Brown County Fair Board President Mike Thompson said he had received "no notification to the contrary" today about the swine show taking place at 7 p.m. as planned.

"We are keeping an eye out," he said. "We have very few pigs. But, we are aware of what is happening around the state."
