Columbus teen arrested after car chase in Nashville
Updated on: 06.02.10

A 17-year-old Columbus girl landed in a detention center after leading Brown County authorities on a short car chase in a reportedly stolen vehicle.

Brown County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Hess saw a gold Chevy Cavalier pulling out of a gas station onto State Road 46 East at 2:52 p.m. Tuesday, June 1. The vehicle, which had a black bungee cord holding down the trunk lid, had been reported stolen out of Bartholomew County, according to a press release issued by Brown County Sheriff Robert "Buck" Stogsdill.

When Hess attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver reportedly turned onto Old State Road 46 and took off toward Nashville at a high rate of speed.

Hess radioed Nashville Town Marshall Stephanie Loerzel, who traveled east to try and intercept the driver at Old State Road 46 and Greasy Creek Road, according to the sheriff's office.

The driver failed to make a turn onto Greasy Creek Road, went up onto an embankment and bounced into a vehicle driven by Gwyn Voils of Morgantown, who was stopped at a stop sign on Greasy Creek Road.

The driver tried to continue down Greasy Creek, but was boxed in by Hess and Loerzel, according to the sheriff's office.

During an inventory of the vehicle, Hess allegedly located marijuana and a smoking device.

The driver was transported to the Columbus detention center by a Brown County jail officer on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a Class D felony; possession of a stolen vehicle, a Class D felony; possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor; leaving the scene of property damage, a Class A misdemeanor; and operating while never receiving a driver's license, a Class A misdemeanor.

The Brown County Democrat does not name juveniles accused of crimes unless they are charged as adults -- which is up to the prosecutor. Brown County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mike Adams said the teen driver could face prosecution in Brown and Bartholomew counties. No formal charges have been filed yet.
