William C. “Bill” Clay, 66 passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, Nov. 24, at his residence in Morgantown after a four-month courageous battle with brain cancer. He was a lifelong resident of Morgantown.

He was born June 10, 1943, in Martinsville to the late Edgar A. and Clarice L. (Buck) Clay.

Bill preceded his loving wife, Karen (Lagenour) Clay, on their 30th wedding anniversary.  They were married Nov. 24, 1979, in Morgantown.

Bill was a 1961 graduate of Morgantown High School. He went on to serve his country as a corporal with United States Marine Corps from 1961-65.

After his service to his country, Bill went on to work in the transportation department of Texaco Oil Company from 1965-1978. He continued on as an over-the-road truck driver until his retirement in 1994. After retirement, he went to work for Bradley Farms in Trafalgar driving grain trucks and operating heavy equipment, where he was known to many as “Uncle Bill.”

Bill was a member of the Morgantown Baptist Church. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, working in his yard and woodworking. Bill loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Clay of Morgantown; three daughters: Stacey Hogue and her husband Tim of Trafalgar, Susan Bretsch and her husband Bart of Bloomington and Stephanie Walker and her husband John of Trafalgar; three sons: James A. “Jim” Clay of Franklin, Robert W. “Bobby” Clay and his wife Tammy of Perkins, Okla., and Mike Boruff of Martinsville; two sisters: Karen Sue Massinon and her husband Bob of Greenwood and Betty J. Harbin and her husband Jack of Morgantown; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

The Revs. Sam Harbin and Ben Swopes will conduct a funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28 at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4- 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27 at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown with military graveside rites presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guards.
